Greetings and Gratitude, 2003

We at New Yorkers for Companion Animals want to express our deep gratitude for your support in the year 2003, whether you have adopted from us, fostered for us or blessed us with needed financial help.

Pictured on the left are four of the over 200 animals New Yorkers for Companion Animals rescued and placed in loving homes this year. All were rescued from the New York Center for Animal Care and Control (New York City's animal impoundment/shelter system). And all have found loving and responsible people to adopt them. Perhaps you are one?

As much as we would like to report life-saving rescues with happy endings and while such is true for those animals who come through NYCA's path, it is sadly not reality for most NYC animals abandoned to our streets and animal pounds. Despite recent and distortive, "feel good" stories in the press that promise NY can be a "no kill" city by 2005, such bears no resemblance to reality. The facts are that NYC shelters have been cut millions of dollars in funding, have had to cut hours and staffing and that most animals who enter our city pounds still die. All shelters and rescue groups are affected by economic shortfalls and much of society's disposable attitude towards pets, including New Yorkers for Companion Animals. This past year we have witnessed both our adoption and contribution numbers struggle to keep up with last year's figures.

We therefore are forced to make special appeal to all who care about animals. Since 1994, New Yorkers for Companion Animals has successfully placed more than 6,000 cats and dogs into carefully screened, nurturing homes. Most of these animals were rescued from the NYCACC. Our goal is to help and save more abandoned pets, but the reality is that our veterinary, boarding, pet food and supply bills are extraordinarily high. This past year we spent more than $5,000 to board rescued dogs until the animals could be placed. Sometimes it takes several months before a rescued dog can find a responsible home. Our boarding and vet costs for the animals thus far outweigh the modest adoption fees we are able to recover. We desperately need your support in order to save more animals. Please consider donation, sponsorship, foster or adoption so that we may continue to aid and save abandoned pets.

Thank you so much! Wishing you a blessed holiday season and the very best in the New Year! -- NYCA
